“I thoroughly enjoy the mental challenge of bringing something out of stone, something that you really can not do with clay or any other medium. I first draw it out dimensionally… make a small clay model then begin carving. I measure and measure, then cut, then measure and then cut again, then recheck my drawing and repeat, finally and hopefully having made no mistakes a figure begins to emerge. Such a great feeling of accomplishment… It is that mental challenge that inspires me!”

Casting Bronze from Stone…

Mark will often select carved-stone works, such as “One Trick Pony”, that he feels would resonate with collectors in bronze. Many great artists (such as Auguste Rodin) made molds of their original hand-carved stone sculptures which they then cast into bronze editions. Just like a clay or wax model the work is often cast in multiple pieces and the artist or foundry will do final finish work & patina.

Harris has been selected for several previous National Sculpture Society exhibitions over the past two decades.
2021 Associates Online Invitational exhibition, 2015 82nd Annual Awards exhibition, 2010 Recent Works exhibition, 2006 73rd Annual Awards exhibition, 2005 72nd Annual Awards exhibition, 2005 The Sea exhibition, 2005 The American West exhibition, 2001 Animals in the Atrium exhibition

About

Mark Yale Harris is an established sculptor from the United States whose work has been exhibited in solo and group shows internationally. He works with materials like alabaster, marble, limestone and bronze to express his perspective on the inherent duality in mans’ essence. Figures and animals are brought to life in abstract interpretations and smooth forms, invoking an awakening of the sensual.

National Sculpture Society was founded in New York City in 1893 by a group of America’s most prominent sculptors. Its members have created much of this country’s public sculpture, coins, and medals since the late 1800s. It is the oldest organization of professional sculptors in the United States and has been hosting exhibitions for over a century.

Brookgreen Gardens was founded by Archer and Anna Hyatt Huntington in 1931 and today is a National Historic Landmark and a garden museum with the most extensive collection of figurative sculpture in an outdoor setting by American artists in the world.
