Fissure

$1,900

Fissure | 11.5" x 9" | Oil

A seemingly non descript mass of rocks actually happens to be a fissure occurring at nearly the precise point where the earth’s Atlantic plate passes the North American plate in Iceland. Water trickles from that fissure, forming a new beginning brook, which travels for miles over waterfalls and empties, eventually, into the North Atlantic. Now, that you know the story, the significance of the place is matched by the significance of the painterly style with which Matthew Cutter has remembered it for us. There’s precision here, in tonal quality and perfection, in the distinction between colors as well as light and shadow. The darkest of which pulls the eye inevitably toward the very source of that water (the darkest shadow in the lower left quadrant) in FISSURE. A monumental little gem!

Gallery Director

American artist Matthew Cutter aims to capture the beauty and solitude of the landscape; adept with both oil and acrylic, he paints his surroundings with sensitivity and poetic expression. A simple color harmony or pattern in nature is often the source of inspiration.

Employing a variety of techniques and tools keeps Matthew’s work fresh and exciting. Largely self-taught, Matthew is attempting to redefine acrylic as a medium equal to oil by manipulating surface textures to look like oil paint. His effort has not gone unnoticed as his collectors often comment on how his acrylic paintings resemble oils.

In 2010, he won the President’s Award at the Salmagundi Club in New York City, and in 2015 he was featured as an emerging artist in Southwest Art magazine. Matthew has work in several corporate collections and has built a loyal following among private collectors.
