\<p\>\<em\>Ex Nihilo, Working Model\</em\> is one of Frederick Hart's most significant sculptural compositions, preserving the working model for the monumental \<em\>Ex Nihilo\</em\> tympanum at Washington National Cathedral in Washington, D\.C\.\</p\>

\<p\>Hart was awarded the prestigious commission to create the sculptural program for the Cathedral's west façade in 1974, at only thirty\-one years old\. The resulting \<em\>Creation Sculptures\</em\>—\<em\>Creation of Day\</em\>, \<em\>Creation of Night\</em\>, and the central \<em\>Ex Nihilo\</em\>—would occupy Hart for years and establish him as one of the foremost American figurative sculptors of his generation\.\</p\>

\<p\>Meaning "out of nothing," \<em\>Ex Nihilo\</em\> depicts humanity emerging from the mystery of creation\. Male and female figures materialize from a swirling, almost primordial field, their bodies appearing to move from abstraction into physical form\. Hart's conception was influenced in part by the writings of Pierre Teilhard de Chardin and his vision of a dynamic, evolving universe\. Rather than illustrating creation as a single static moment, Hart presents it as an ongoing act of becoming\.\</p\>

\<p\>The working model played an important role in the development of the monumental Cathedral sculpture\. Hart developed \<em\>Ex Nihilo\</em\> through increasingly large models in clay before the final composition was translated into Indiana limestone for the Cathedral's west façade\.\</p\>

\<p\>Following Hart's death in 1999, this cast\-marble edition of the \<em\>Ex Nihilo, Working Model\</em\> was released in 2002 as part of the Washington National Cathedral Collection\. Cast directly from Hart's working model, it allows the complete composition of one of his greatest monumental achievements to be experienced as an independent work of sculpture\.\</p\>

From the front, we behold the outer beauty of a raidant Madonna\-like vision whose face is enfolded by cloudlike drapery gently softening the fall of light upon her features\. \</p\>

\<p\>However, Hart challenges us to look beyond her external brilliance, and reveal the spiritual mysteries shrouded beneath her protective shawl\. Slowly, as we turn the piece, we begin to see the world through her own eyes, a world of inner peace suffused with a purity that brings us closer to the mystery of her very soul\. \</p\>
